's what this is all about. >> congressman ryan? >> i want to thank you as well, martha. danville, kentucky, centre college. i want to thank you, joe. it's been an honor to engage in this critical debate. we face a very big choice. what kind of country are we going to be? what kind of country are we going to give our kids? president obama, he had his chance. he made his choices. his economic agenda, more spending, more borrowing, higher taxes, a government takeover of health care. it's not working. it's failed to create the jobs we need. 23 million americans are struggling for work today. 15% of americans are in poverty. this is not what a real recovery looks like. you deserve better. mitt romney and i want to earn your support. we're offering real reforms for a real recovery for every american. mitt romney, his experience, his ideas, his solutions is uniquely qualified to get this job done. at a time when we have a jobs crisis in america, wouldn't it be nice to have a job creator in the white house? the choice is clear. a stagnant economy that promotes more government dependency, or a dyna

versus ryan. if you're advising the vice president, because he's got a lot of ground work to make up for it here out of that first debate for their ticket, what do you tell him? >> i'd say to joe biden, be yourself, because biden has a unique way of bringing reality into these very substantive conversations. and i'll use big bird as an example, and we're sort of making a joke, and yes, it gives people laughter, but there's something very serious about this issue. i mean, the "sesame street" programming, pbs programming has been in -- i worked in education for a number of years -- the gold standard, not just here in the united states, around the world, recognized as a gold standard in children's education. at a time when kids in our country, not enough of them can actually read proficiently, what sense does it make to cut? i mean, we're not going to balance that $5 trillion hole by getting rid of big bird. that's what i think part of reminding people about big bird does, how ridiculous the rhetoric from the romney/ryan campaign is, but also the idea that, so, you're going to cut somet

'm larry kudlow. this is "the kudlow report." our top story tonight, paul ryan's resounding victory in last night's debate with vice president joe biden. the first ten minutes sealed it. 43 million people watched and the polls are showing a snap cnn poll gave the win to ryan and so did the cnbc survey. biden's snarky, disrespectful laughing and out-of-control interruptions hurt him enormously. plus, he gave no reason for barack obama to be reelected ryan played and cool and smart. the best line today from marco rubio. take a listen to this. >> let me tell you, it's not easy to do a good job onstage when you have a heckler on the stage with you. >> biden misled everyone with a string of falsehoods. tonight we have the man who developed the cia's program that detects deception. what you'll hear from him is going to shock you. then again, maybe it won't. >> plussic brai ibreaking news, panetta warns a cyber pearl harbor is about to happen and the fingerprints point to iran. also tonight, the nobel peace prize gets awarded to the european union celebrating socialist bailouts and a useless burea

. thursday's debate between vice president joe biden and paul ryan was a substantive contest between two men who were well briefed and on their game. conventional wisdom was twofold. biden needed to calm democrats. he needed to set the stage for his boss to regain his footing during his second debate with mitt romney this tuesday. i think biden accomplished that mission. i think what made the difference was that biden was aggressive, uninhibited with preoccupation by preserving his own image and adept at leveraging his stature. the single best exchange biden wasted no time for calling out ryan for his apparent hypocrisy when it comes to stimulus funds. >> look at the $90 billion in stimulus. the vice president was in charge of seeing this. $90 billion in green pork to campaign contributors and special interest groups. >> i'm not allowed to show letters. go on our website. he sent me two letters saying, by the way, can you send me some stimulus money for companies here in the state of wisconsin. we sent millions of dollars. you know what -- >> you did ask for stimulus money. >> sure he did. >

is true with his running mate, paul ryan. unfortunately, we'll probably hear more of that this week. we do have a great surrogate team and they're on the ground in their respective cities or states. they move around. i certainly move around. you talk about deval patrick, i'm in chicago, rahm emanuel, stephanie rawlins blake in baltimore, kasim reed, the list goes on and on. we have the best candidate in president obama and vice president biden. we have the greatest surrogate team, and they're on the ground in those places where there are real people with real issues and real problems, and they're talking about the things that the president talks about, jobs and the economy, health care, education, energy, and tax reform. those are the president's themes. he's never walked away from any of those issues, and it's easier, i think quite frankly for mitt romney to have multiple positions on the same issue because he has no plans. he has no ideas. he has no proposals. he's not ready for prime time. >> okay. we've got a month to go. please spread the word among the surrogates you mentioned we are

ryan. they really went at it, especially biden. here he is, mr. fact check, joe biden, challenging congressman ryan on ryan's medicare plan. >> this is a plan that is bipartisan. it is a plan i put together with a prominent democrat senator from oregon. >> there is not one democrat who endorses it. not one democrat who signed the plan. >> my partner is a democrat from oregon. >> he says he no longer supports your plan. >> we put it together with the former clinton budget director. >> and so it went. but now all of a sudden we have mitt romney checking joe biden's facts concerning the consulate attack in libya. and this is something you haven't yet heard. this is mitt romney speaking just a short time ago, here he is in richmond, virginia, you need to hear this. mitt romney. >> the vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of state department officials. he's doubling down on denial. and we need to understand exactly what happened. when the vice president of the united states directly contradicts the testimony, sworn testimony of state department officials, american ci

'm sure you'll find out in these debates. >> that suddenly became not fun at all for paul ryan. he actually asked for "hardball" questions. what's with all this softball? oh, wait, abortion? let's go back to the softballs, huh, guys? that was just one awkward exchange with reporters today, but it portends a bigger fundamental shift that has just had to happen in the romney/ryan campaign. now, over and over and over again on this campaign, on issues big and small, the romney/ryan campaign before today has been able to use one particular technique to escape the consequences of having unpopular policy ideas or policy ideas they don't particularly want to defend. they do this same thing over and over again, and usually, it works for them. here's the pattern. here's the pattern they have established. here's mitt romney back in august telling scott pelly of "06 minutes" that he believes abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. seriously? mitt romney thinks abortion is okay if a woman's health is in danger? no, not really. his campaign later said, no, never mind what mitt r

. what did mitt romney do? he brought in paul ryan who has even less, if you could imagine that, foreign policy experience except maybe perhaps voting against tougher sanctions on iran while he was in congress. as far as that argument's concerned, i think it's rather debunked. i want to read to you very quickly a quote from mitt romney from that video with the 47%. this is his -- this is his foreign policy in a nutshell. so what do you do -- this is about peace in the middle east. you say you move things along the best way you can. you hope for some degree of stability. but you recognize this is an unsolved problem and we kick the ball down the field and hope ultimately somehow something will happen and resolve it. that's what mitt romney said on foreign policy behind closed doors. whatever he says today in a couple of hours, you got to juxtapose that to that quote in the video when he thought no one else was listening. >> john, one of mitt romney's problems is the only specifics he's given as to how his foreign policy differs from president obama is that he's going to talk tougher and s

're sticking with their game plan, that is to draw contrast with paul ryan. that they intend to do that. that they intend to talk about foreign policy as well as domestic policy. and that they want to continue to draw the contrasts with the romney campaign because they believe romney has been kind of soft in telling us where he's going to go on foreign policy in his speech today as well as on domestic policy, how would he reduce that deficit. so they still think they've got openings here, wolf. and they do. anything can happen. overnight's a lifetime in politics, particularly when it comes to a close presidential race like this. >> and all those folks thought that president obama had it wrapped up a few days ago, not yet. gloria, stand by. mitt romney was clearly hammering away at the president's foreign policy before a military audience today and sketched out a stronger, bolder response by a romney administration. cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta has more on that. >> reporter: wolf, after millions of americans watched mitt romney go toe to toe with president obama at t

the big debate. the debate smackdown. ryan feeling good, and biden maybe looking afraid here. robert gibbs, how do you see this shaping up? are we going to see biden overcompensating, being more aggressive than he might have otherwise? >> i don't think that vice president biden will overcompensate. the question is which paul ryan do we get? do we get this same sort of, you know, chameleon we saw in mitt romney who literally walks away from virtually everything that his campaigned on for two years in the space of less than two hours. i know that vice president biden is anxious and ready to do this and the president is anxious to get back to it as well. >> how do you size it up? >> i think ryan is one of the brightest people in congress. i think he knows an immense amount of facts. but i suspect he's going to be respectful of biden. i mean, there's a generational difference here that i think will lead ryan to not give an inch, but to not be very hostile. >> i was just going to say history shows when there's an age difference, the elder statesman wins the vice presidential debates. cheney and

to be talking to obama supporter ohio congressman tim ryan, he will be our best this morning as well and we're going to be talking to former ambassador williamson to talk about the very detailed foreign policy issues as well as tara was suggesting so we'll take her up on that suggestion. ahead on "starting point" his biggest challenge in years. hugo chavez wins re-election and could have a big impact on what happens here in the united states. a live report from caracas straight ahead. >>> supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life. a wedding you're looking at. not a brawl after a hockey game. it is a wedding and turned tragic. we'll tell you what happened. this was caught on tape. we'll share the terrible ending. what do you have in business? >> i have gas prices going up in california. higher and higher. california setting new records this week, ing misery at the pump. what's behind the jump and what they're doing to try to stop it. you're watching "starting point." mike rowe here at a ford dealer with a little q&a for fiona. tell me fiona, who's having a big tire event? your ford

a lot of pressure on vice president joe biden in his showdown tonight with paul ryan. john harwood is in kentucky with the preview. john. >> reporter: michelle, this is going to be a fascinating night between two number twos who might, in the future, be number ones. for right now, they're trying to help their tickets. joe biden, as you mentioned, who arrived in danville. he's now chilling at a supporter's house with his family before going to the debate tonight, has got a lot on the line because democrats were feeling let down by president obama's performance last week. what joe biden has to do is to buck up those democrats, show he's going to be aggressive in going after the republican ticket, and, you know, he has experience in the venue. he debated sarah palin four years ago, although much different then. that was a comparatively genial event. i would expect him to be quite aggressive. from paul ryan's point of view, he's younger, so less experienced, but he's very fluent and skilled on policy. he came across very well in his republican convention speech. so i'd expect him to ho

. so we have to see whether paul ryan, who is very smart policy guy, can beat joe biden who makes shall mistake, but he's been around a long time and he those some thing. p. >> you wrote a column suting the debates ultimately are oftentimes historically irrelevant, that they don't change the outcome. is there something specifically happening this time that's different? >> what i said in that story was that historical pattern is that usually even if you have a surprisingly good first debate for one party or the other, usually they don't change the trajectory of the campaign. but every once in a while, and 2000 is the best example, a whole series of thins come together and the vice presidential debate is important in that process to accelerate the wave or stop it. and that's what we'll find out in kentucky later. >> you said the jobs number doesn't matter. is that in part this whole jack welch thing over the weekend around whether the numbers are real, does that matter in all of this? >> i think the jack welch stuff was crazy talk. and earlier in the year when you guys were down in washin

what direction to go. we know what direction we want to go. we want the paul ryan budget which cuts spending $6 trillion. the republicans in the house have passed 24-plus bills that create jobs and opportunity and strip out regulations. we just need a president to sign this stuff. and pick a republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the united states. >> you know, that's not an unfair shot. he basically believes he has those pledges in his pocket. he knows he can control fiscal policy in the congress with or without the new president. if there's a new president. he's got romney's arms tied in the same way that the religious right has his arms tied on abortion rights, same-sex, the the way the neo cons have his arms tied in terms of foreign policy. >> one question either the moderate or obama should ask, name one issue in which you plan to buck your party, one issue in which you plan to stand up to house republicans, one issue in which you don't plan to govern as a severe conservative as you described your record in massachusetts before you were des

ryan? >> i'd like to hear from biden, i'm not sure. >> biden being biden. but biden's a very skillful debater. >> here we go. >> he's a survivor. >> wait a minute -- that's preceded by idiot -- >> those are your words. >> he's been in the senate. both he and ryan have been, i think, five or six terms each. >> ryan in the house. >> right. >> he's in the house. but they've both had the same experience in terms of election. but 40 years of debating putting biden in somewhat of the driver's seat because of that. just because of his experience. >> we haven't seen him in five months on a tv network. on a national network. has not been an interview in five months. the last time he was on, he came out in favor of gay marriage and then the president had to -- >> he's saving himself. >> and there hasn't been a press briefing. a white house press briefing in 15 days because those can be on video. the gaggles you can't videotape and it's only people that are traveling with the president. credential guys can get into the other one, and there hasn't been one in 15 days. >> amazing. >> you wouldn't

biden and paul ryan voters will get a chance to hear what candidates have to say about a host of issues beyond budget, policy and health care. things like voting rights, women's rights, topics that were omitted last week between president obama and romney. the issue of sensible gun laws. the first presidential debate took place a short distance from aurora, colorado. a victim had a message for the candidates in an ad that airs during the debate. >> this past summer in a movie theater in colorado, i was shot. shot in the face and neck. but i was lucky. in the next four years, 48,000 americans won't be so lucky because they will be murdered with guns in the next president's term. enough to fill 200 theaters. when you watch the presidential debates, ask yourself, who has a plan to stop gun violence? let's demand a plan. it didn't get an area. joining us is comedian chris. john warner and rebecca, contributor to the magazine. i feel of two minds about the debate. focus is good. depth is good. i was appreciative they allowed depth on the issues they talked about, but frustrates there's only

this thursday on the 11th you've got paul ryan and vice president joe biden. this is going to be very important for obama's effort to stave off romney. then on the 16th you got the second obama-romney debate. on the 22nd final obama-romney debate. then the last friday before the election one more jobs number. my own inclination the job numbers aren't quite as "game change"ing for debates as for the reason voters know how they feel about the economy. they don't need a government report. it does get a lot of attention and we got a race that's plainly at this point even though obama still has a slight advantage in the battleground states this race can go either way. >> interesting. then we got the governor, of course, speaking at vmi about foreign policy, an area for which a little while he appeared to want to take the campaign, at least before the debate. how ground moving is this? >> reporter: i don't think it's very ground moving. it's not what people will vote on. for romney it's an effort to press a leadership advantage which may be one of the things that move the numbers for him after the de
